On my first day back from vacation, I’m informed a private meeting has been scheduled with Nadine. I assume she’ll resign over my rejection of her friend. Delaney and Bridget decide to participate in the discussion, though they sit off to the side near the bookshelves.

Nadine enters the room, revealing nothing. I expect her to own a stellar game face. Her father was a well-known assassin for the Memphis mob. Rafael “Saint” Ramsey eventually went into business as a “security specialist.” Nadine’s done wetwork in the past, even eliminating men I knew. She may look like a sexy pinup doll, but she isn’t to be trifled with. Her resignation will be a hit to my organization.

“This meeting is private in nature,” she explains, sitting across from me and casually crossing one leg over the other.

She’s wearing all black today, looking overly serious. I lean back and wait for her to drop the hammer.

“I’m well aware what I’m about to tell you is grossly unprofessional.”

“Let me have it,” I reply.

“To understand what I’m about to do, you need to know how Cavalry and I ended up together. It really won’t make sense otherwise.”

Once I gesture for her to continue, she says, “Cavalry was twelve years old when he said he loved me. Since I was eighteen at that point, I didn’t respond in kind. Every year when I visited, he told me how I was his one-and-only love. As Cavalry grew from a boy into a man, he never wavered. Last summer, I decided to give him a shot, and we know how that ended.”

“You make an attractive couple,” I respond since I assume the point of this story is to explain why she must take Sylvie’s side and quit.

“The Majors family believes wholeheartedly in their one-and-only love being an undeniably magical connection. I’m a believer now myself. That’s why I didn’t interfere when Sylvie stalked you for weeks. I figured you might enjoy her attention. Besides, her behavior was harmless.”

“I agree.”

“Then, you rejected her,” she states passively.

“That I did.”

“Which means she’ll amp up the stalking now.”

I don’t know if my surprise is obvious on my face, but my sisters do nothing to hide their amusement. Nadine doesn’t acknowledge them, remaining focused on me.

“Sylvie asked my permission to make you listen to your heart. I’m not entirely certain what that means. I do know she’s determined and will likely cause you problems. Since she isn’t a real threat to your safety, I’ve given my approval. Yet, I’m aware my personal feelings for my friend and sister-in-law might make me a poor choice to handle your security.”

“Like you said, she isn’t a threat.”

“To your physical safety? No, not at all. I suspect she’d take a bullet to protect you. But your mental health might be tested. Oh, and I have no doubt she’ll cause property damage. She bought several bags worth of spray paint after returning to Arcadia. There’ll most definitely be graffiti.”

Bridget bursts into laughter before subduing herself.
